Conservation Efforts

At Kiwi Reserve, our work goes beyond the hive.  We understand that to produce the finest honey, we must tend to the land that supports our bees and the other diverse wildlife that calls it home.

We employ a dedicated team who focus on predator control.  Their tireless work involves the maintenance and rebaiting of hundreds of traps which are strategically placed in order to protect our area from invasive species such as  stoats, possums, and rats.  These efforts are crucial in keeping our conservation area safe for the native kiwi and other endemic species.

In addition to predator control, we work tirelessly to restore the natural ecosystem.  Our team is actively involved in planting native trees and safeguarding them from potential harm caused by possums and wild goats.  So far to date, we have planted more than one million trees.

Our engagement with the 'Operation Nest Egg' initiative is another aspect of our mission.  Kiwis raised in our safe environment have become ambassadors of their species, helping to introduce new genetic diversity to other kiwi populations. This operation underscores our commitment to protect and perpetuate the kiwi lineage, ensuring that future generations continue to thrive.

We are embracing technological advancements in order to pioneer new ways to monitor and protect our environment.  We utilise live, remote cameras to detect  predators in real time, enabling us to respond swiftly to potential threats.  Additionally, we're developing a device that can automatically classify bird calls.  By monitoring bird calls in remote areas over time, we can gauge the health of the ecosystem and the impact of our conservation and reforestation efforts.

Our work is an ongoing journey of dedication and innovation.  We take pride in our efforts to protect our kiwi neighbours, to nourish the land they inhabit, and to produce honey in the most sustainable and ethical way.  When you choose Kiwi Reserve honey, you're not only selecting a high-quality product, but you're also supporting the vital work that goes into preserving our precious ecosystem.  Together, we can ensure a sustainable future for our precious biodiversity - kiwi, other endangered birds and species, our bees as well as the land and wild forests in which they make their home.
